Illustrative

I was bullied at practically every school I attended — mainly because of my considerable chin. I didn't understand the nature of personal attacks back then, and I don't really understand them now, except that I suspect insecurity lies behind most wilful cruelty. If you make someone a victim, you avoid becoming one yourself.

It was therefore natural to translate Zero into illustrative stories set in a school — but with adults wearing the blazers and uniforms — and Zero as the put-upon enemy in their midst. Some extracts are presented here, alongside a 'Zero' take on race relations.

Because of the bullying context, some may find certain sequences distressing — though most of it was drawn directly from first-hand experience. On that basis, it justifies inclusion.
